OAKLAND, Calif. -- Two pitchers hoping to make the most of an otherwise meaningless September clash of fourth- and fifth-place teams will go head-to-head when the Los Angeles Angels and Oakland Athletics wrap up a three-game series Wednesday.Angels right-hander Alex Meyer will be making his second major league start and As righty Jharel Cotton his first in the afternoon affair.Meyer has two advantages of Cotton in the matchup.First off, hell be facing an As team thats been no-hit into the eighth and sixth innings in two of their last three games. Also, Meyer has four games of big-league experience under his belt, even if those outings didnt go well.Pitching at the time for the Minnesota Twins, Meyer made two relief appearances in 2015 and one earlier this season, pitching a total of 3 2/3 innings. He allowed seven runs on seven hits in those outings.Given a shot to start at Houston on May 1, the 26-year-old didnt fare much better, giving up three runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings. He was charged with the loss in the 6-4 loss. The 6-foot-9 former first-round pick of the Washington Nationals will bring a 14.21 career ERA, fifth highest among all pitchers who have made four or more appearances the last two seasons, into the contest.Meyer will be making his Angels debut. He was acquired on Aug. 1 along with Tuesdays starting pitcher, Ricky Nolasco, from the Minnesota Twins for left-hander Hector Santiago and minor league right-hander Alan Busenitz. This pitcher absolutely has as much upside as any pitcher in the game today, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said of Meyer following his acquisition. He just has to realize some of that potential, turn it into performance.Cotton was one of three pitchers acquired by the As when they dealt right fielder Josh Reddick and left-hander Rich Hill to the Los Angeles Dodgers at the trade deadline. He will be making his major league debut after going 3-1 with a 2.82 ERA in six starts for Nashville, the As Triple-A affiliate.Cotton will be the seventh Oakland pitcher to make his major league debut this season, and second in three days.Right-hander Raul Alcantaras turn in the spotlight turned quickly into a complete disaster in the series opener Monday. He hit three of the first eight batters he faced and lasted only three innings, allowing five runs on five hits in a 10-7 loss.Cotton attended Tuesdays 3-2, come-from-behind win over the Angels even though he technically hadnt been placed on the active roster. This is awesome. Im glad Im here, he told reporters before the game. Im excited. Just have to go out there and pitch and have a good time with my teammates.Cotton can only hope his big day turns out to be as special as fellow rookie Joey Wendles was Tuesday.Wendle recorded his first game-winning RBI, capping a three-run rally that produced the 3-2 win.Wendle recorded his first major league hit, first major league RBI and first major league game-winning hit all within the first six days of the month. Much like the opening day of DreamHack Bucharest, everything on Day 2 went according to the script for the most part. Keyword: for the most part. The main source of drama came from a near-upset of one of the European juggernauts of the Counter Strike: Global Offensive scene. The beginning of the day started out as expected when Gambit eSports took on Team EnVyUs in the losers match of Group A. Kenny kennyS Schrub once again rose to the occasion and put up some gaudy numbers - he finished with a 45/27 KD in the quick series - to allow Team EnVyUs to grab the 2-0 win. Team EnVyUs moved on to a rematch with Heroic in the decider match of Group A.The Group B losers match saw some much more competitive play between Team Dignitas and FlipSid3 Tactics. This series went the distance with both teams upping their level of play in the do-or-die series. While FlipSid3 Tactics put up a strong 16-9 performance on Cobblestone in Game 2, led by Yegor markeloff Markelovs 25/14 KD, the team was handled fairly easily in Games 1 and 2 on Train and Mirage, respectively. René cajunb Borg was the point-man for Team Dignitas in this series with his 59/37 KD. With the win, Team Dignitas moved on to face FaZe Clan in the Group B decider match.Of the two decider matches, Group As was by far the most competitive, with the contest going the full slate of three games. After the first game saw Team EnVyUs take a fairly easy 16-8 win off Heroic, it almost looked as though Team EnVyUs would secure the sweep on Nuke in Game 2. Heroic was not content to let that hhappen, and clawed back with an extremely hard fought 16-13 win in the second game.dddddddddddd. It seemed, though, that that was all Heroic had left in the tank, as it dropped the final game 16-9. Nathan NBK Schmitt was a beast in this series, posting a game-high 71/46 KD. Team EnVyUs will now face Cloud9 in the semifinals of DreamHack Bucharest on Sunday morning. The Group B decider match was supposed to be FaZe Clans shot to show that it could make it out of the group stages of a major tournament, but that didnt happen in the slightest. For the second time in as many weeks, FaZe Clan were unceremoniously bounced from the group stages. This time, the group was swept by Team Dignitas in a series that wasnt even close. Both games were won handily by Dignitas, securing victories by a 16-7 and 16-6 margin, respectively. While FaZe Clan will have to head back to the EU ESL Pro League and try to continue to prove itself, Team Dignitas will move on to the semifinals of DreamHack Bucharest to take on Virtus.pro.The playoffs of this tournament certainly have plenty of storylines to watch out for: Will Virtus.pro snag a grand finals win and prove that its the best? Will Cloud9 extend its recent dominance into the international scene? Will Team EnVyUs or Team Dignitas complete a run all the way from the losers match to win the whole thing? Well find out when the action kicks off again on Sunday at 3:30 AM EST. ' ' '
