MEXICO CITY -- Mexico coach Jose Manuel De la Torre was fired and replaced by Luis Fernando Tena on Saturday within hours of an embarrassing home loss to Honduras in World Cup qualifying. Mexico lost 2-1 to Honduras on Friday, only its second ever loss in World Cup qualifying matches at Estadio Azteca, and the first since 2001 when Costa Rica won a match remembered in Mexico as the "Aztecazo." The Mexican federation wasted little time after the match firing De la Torre and choosing his replacement, as it sent out a press release with the details at about 3 a.m. on Saturday. Tena, who was one of De la Torres top assistants, has won the Mexican league twice and guided Mexico to the gold medal at the London Olympics, one of the biggest sports achievements in Mexicos history. It was Mexicos first Olympic medal in team sports since a bronze in basketball in 1936. Tena was to be introduced late Saturday at Centro de Alto Rendimiento. Mexico is fourth in the six-team CONCACAF final qualifying group. Only the top three qualify for the finals in Brazil next year, while the fourth will go into a playoff series against Oceania winner New Zealand. Mexico has not missed a World Cup since 1990.
