ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Felix Hernandez thinks the Mariners off-season reboot will produce impressive results this season, and Seattles ace was glad to help out in yet another win on opening day. Abraham Almonte hit a tiebreaking RBI double in the seventh inning and Hernandez struck out 11 in the new-look Mariners eighth consecutive victory on opening day, 10-3 over the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night. Hernandez (1-0) gave up four hits over six innings in his seventh opening day start for the Mariners. After he allowed a first-inning homer by Mike Trout, Hernandez settled into his usual brilliance -- and unlike many nights last season, his teammates provided enough runs to win. "Youve just got to make good pitches, and were going to be OK this season," said Hernandez, who passed Randy Johnson for the club record for opening day starts. "I can feel that. I made a couple of mistakes, but I felt really confident with these guys." Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer and Dustin Ackley had a three-run triple while the Mariners batted around in the ninth inning, roaring back from an early two-run deficit. Robinson Cano went 2 for 4 with a double and an intentional walk in the $240 million second basemans debut for new Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon, who hesitated to ascribe much significance to a close game that turned into a blowout win. "I thought our starter did a tremendous job and battled all night," said McClendon, who replaced Eric Wedge. "The bullpen did a fantastic job, and the offence did a great job grinding out at-bats." Trout hit a two-run homer and Albert Pujols had a run-scoring double for the Angels, who had won nine of 10 on opening day, including five straight. Their evening got off to an ominous start when hitting coach Don Baylor broke his right leg while catching Vladimir Guerreros ceremonial first pitch. "Obviously its a freak (injury)," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "Well see how it turns out." The former Rockies and Cubs manager will have surgery on his femur Tuesday. Baylors leg bent awkwardly before he had to be helped to the dugout, leaving the Angels stunned as they took the field. "It got me sick when I was warming up and hearing what happened in the dugout," Trout said. Hernandez outdueled Jered Weaver (0-1), who yielded six hits and three walks in his club-record sixth start on opening day. Mike Zunino had an RBI triple in the seventh to chase Weaver, and Almonte drove him home with a double off Angels newcomer Fernando Salas. Smoak connected in the ninth off Kevin Jepsen while the Mariners batted around. After Cano grounded out to short in his first plate appearance, the longtime Yankees second baseman got his first Mariners hit on a 50-foot squib to third base in the fourth inning. He rapped a solid double to right in the ninth before Smoaks shot. The Angels top newcomers didnt impress for openers: David Freese went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts, and longtime Mariners slugger Raul Ibanez was 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. Trouts new $144.5 million contract doesnt even begin until next season, but the brightest young talent in baseball wasted no time delivering. After Kole Calhouns leadoff single, Trout put an emphatic drive over the left field fence against Hernandez. Pujols double boosted Los Angeles lead to 3-1 in the third. The Mariners nearly tied it with a two-out rally in the sixth, but Calhoun swiftly fielded Kyle Seagers RBI double off the right field wall, and cutoff man Howie Kendrick threw out Logan Morrison at the plate. But one inning later, Zunino put a one-out triple over Josh Hamiltons head in left, scoring Ackley. NOTES: Morrison had three strikeouts and two walks in his Mariners debut. ... Weaver has started the last five consecutive opening days, while Hernandez has started six straight Mariners openers. ... Ibanez has spent the majority of his career in Seattle during three stints with the club. He had 29 homers and 65 RBIs for the Mariners last year. Discount Bulls Jerseys . "Were going to listen to everybody," Cheveldayoff said. "If theres a guy that a team has an interest in, then my phone is open for a phone call." Cheveldayoffs colleagues shouldnt bother asking about defencemen Jacob Trouba and Josh Morrissey and centre Mark Scheifele, but other than that the Jets seem open for business. Rumours have swirled around left-winger Evander Kane and defenceman/forward Dustin Byfuglien, who could be prime targets as other teams seek to take advantage of the Jets desire to make changes. Kane could be on his way out of Winnipeg this weekend or before the season starts. But if he is, Cheveldayoff isnt showing his hand. "Im really not going to get into those kinds of discussions," Cheveldayoff said Thursday in his pre-draft news conference. "I think its unfair to the individual players. Theres enough out there at different points in time that some of it is probably true and some is probably false. At the end of the day, it is a business where you do discuss making moves that will help each others franchises but these are people that are involved, as well." The Jets havent made the playoffs in three seasons since moving to Winnipeg from Atlanta. The Thrashers missed the playoffs in the four previous years. So understandably theres some impatience among fans, even in a difficult Western Conference. Cheveldayoff, on the other hand, is a paragon of patience, and that extends to this time of year. "You cant will yourself to make the playoffs," he said. "You have to continue to build and get the pieces that will try to push you forward. Thats why so much attention is paid to the draft and the process and certainly in our organization." The Jets pick ninth in Friday nights first round, the same spot they got Trouba in 2012. Scouts disagree about how many difference-makers are available in this draft, ranging from eight to 12. There is a consensus about the top five players available: defenceman Aaron Ekblad, centres Samm Reinhart, Sam Bennett, forward Leon Draisaitl and winger Michael Dal Colle.dddddddddddd To get one, the Jets would have to move up. "You make the calls, you try and see if there is opportunities," Cheveldayoff said. "I guess there has to be an appetite in the different people to want to move because there are some good players there. Teams arent just going to say, Yeah, you know what, lets make a move. It has to make sense for both sides." In three drafts at the helm, Cheveldayoff has yet to move up or down in the first round. He has also not made a player-for-player trade at any point as Winnipegs GM. So history is stacked against the Jets trading Kane or Byfuglien, even if the current reality makes it possible. Late in the regular season after being a healthy scratch, Kane refused to answer a question about whether he had or would ask for a trade. Cheveldayoff danced around the subject Thursday when asked if Kane had requested to be dealt. "These kinds of questions are really unfair," he said. "There are lots of conversations that go on. Im sure there were levels of frustration at different points in time for individual players. From our standpoint, Evander is a Winnipeg Jet and I know that theres obviously been lots of different rumours out there. At this point in time, thats how were going to proceed. As far as any demands, were working as normal here." Normal to the Jets means continuing to stockpile talent at the draft. Only problem is, after No. 9, they dont have a pick until the third round, 69th overall, after sending a second away for winger Devin Setoguchi last summer. Its unlikely Winnipeg will be able to get immediate help with even its first-round pick. But Cheveldayoff could stay true to his long-term plan by making picks and moves this weekend. "Youre trying to gain depth in an organization, so that if you have other assets that other people covet, then you can maybe make those kind of moves," he said. "But until you have the assets that allow you to be competitive in the short term and maybe make long-term moves, you have to keep building."
