The Winnipeg Goldeyes werent able to counter a hot hitting St. Paul Saints team on Wednesday night. The Goldeyes (60-35) fell 14-7 to the Saints (48-46) in front of 5,888 fans at Midway Stadium. The Saints, who struck first, scored one run in the first inning without a hit. They then opened up their lead with four more runs in the second to take a quick 5-0 lead. The Goldeyes response wasnt immediate, but in the top of the fifth inning, the Fish batters found their rhythm. Winnipeg would score seven runs in the inning to go up by two. The inning was highlighted by a Josh Mazzola grand slam. Mazzolas hit came on a 3-2 count, and he was able to drive in Donnie Webb, Reggie Abercrombie and Casey Haerther. "It was nice to have guys get on base and guys were having good patient at bats," said Goldeyes Pitching Coach Jamie Vermilyea on the Jewel 101 post game show. In the bottom of the same inning, the Saints would answer back with a two-run home run by Jake Taylor. At that point, the game was tied at seven. "We were able to put those seven runs on the board which was big for us," said Vermilyea. "But its tough to give that lead up after such a good inning, and then to come back again is even tougher." The Saints got another two-run homer in the sixth to reestablish their lead. They then added three more runs in the seventh to extend their lead to five. The Saints werent done there, as they would tack on two insurance runs in the eighth inning, to take a 14-7 lead going into the final inning. In the last frame the Goldeyes couldnt muster a response, and went down in order. "These types of games are going to happen," said Vermilyea. "You just want to try and stay away from them happening this late in the year." Saints pitcher Dylan Thomas was able to come on in relief and earn the win. He went 2 2/3 innings, striking out two and didnt give up a run. Taylor Sewitt took the loss for the Goldeyes also in a relief position as he gave up two runs in 1 2/3 innings of work. The Goldeyes and Saints will play a rubber match as they wrap up their three game series on Thursday night at 7 p.m. The game will be the last ever Saints game at Midway Stadium. The team will play in a new downtown ballpark starting next season. "Theres going to be a lot of people here [tomorrow night] and it should be a good baseball game with a fun atmosphere," Vermilyea said. The Goldeyes return home on Friday to open their final series of the regular season. Theyll take on the Gary SouthShore RailCats on Friday evening at 7 p.m. Joe Klecko Jersey . Jachai Polite Jersey .Y. -- When the New York Islanders lead was cut in half in the opening minute of the third period, the sense of impending doom began wafting through Nassau Coliseum. SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Jacksonville Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drews left foot is still hurting. His humour appears to be just fine. Jones-Drew was held out of practice as a precaution on Wednesday after his foot swelled up in the morning, three days after he suffered a strained tendon while being tackled by Oakland Raiders safety Charles Woodson in the first half of Jacksonvilles 19-9 loss. The veteran running back talked excitedly about visiting family and friends as the Jaguars stay in Northern California in preparation for Sundays game in Seattle. He grew up in Oakland and his mother still lives in the area. But Jones-Drew also had some choice words for Tracy McGrady after the former NBA star went on Twitter and said the winless Jaguars should offer him a tryout at quarterback or wide receiver. "Jacksonville (at)jaguars need to bring me on in for a tryout at QB or receiver!" McGrady tweeted on Monday. Speaking with reporters at San Jose States Spartan Stadium where the Jaguars are practicing, Jones-Drew said McGrady should follow through and try out for the team. "Youre more than welcome to come and sign a waiver and come to a live practice and see how it works out for you if its that easy," Jones-Drew said. Asked how many practices McGrady could make it through, Jones-Drew smiled. "You never know," Jones-Drew said. "He might be tougher than what most people think." Jones-Drews own health is in question this week. He had taken a pitch and cut up the field when Woodson made a flying tackle after diving over Jacksonville left tackle Eugene Monroe midway through the second quarter last Sunday. Woodson appeared to grab Jones-Drew around his neck to make the tackle but no penalty was called. "Not a dirty play," said Jones-Drew, who limped off the field after the play and ddidnt return.dddddddddddd"It was a great play. For a guy at his age to kind of sell out to do that .... I thought it was a horse-collar but he made a phenomenal play." Jones-Drew said his foot got stuck in the turf. The Jaguars had been hopeful of getting Jones-Drew on the field but pushed back plans to have him practice Wednesday after he woke up and noticed swelling in his injured foot. Neither he nor coach Gus Bradley believe its a significant setback, however. "The swellings come back down," Jones-Drew said. "Its still a little there but I should be back ready to go by (Thursday)." Bradley agreed. "They felt like it was doing pretty good and then he had some swelling that occurred," Bradley said. "I know he feels better about it today than he did yesterday, so well just see how it goes." Injured quarterback Blaine Gabbert is also making slow progress. Gabbert did some light throwing before practice but remains a longshot to play in Seattle. Chad Henne, who started in place of Gabbert against Oakland last week, expects the crowd noise to be a factor in Seattle. To help, Bradley had music piped into Wednesdays practice. "At times (the music) can be just as loud but you can never know what youre getting into unless its third down or its a key play in the game," Henne said. "We just have to adjust to it and do the best we can." Notes: Tight end Marcedes Lewis (calf), cornerback Alan Ball (groin) and wide receiver Mike Brown (back) were held out of practice. ... Offensive linemen Uche Nwaneri (knee) and Will Rackley (knee), wide receivers Ace Sanders (ribs) and Stephen Burton (hip), linebacker J.T. Thomas (hamstring), defensive tackle Roy Miller (knee) were limited. ... Defensive end Jason Babin and centre Brad Meester were given the day off.
