MANHATTAN, Kan. -- The only thing consistent about Kansas State this season has been Bill Snyders postgame message. One that laments the Wildcats inconsistency.Their yin-and-yang was on display once more on Saturday in a 24-21 victory over Texas. Kansas State was dominant on both sides of the ball in the first half, then committed a series of mistakes in the second half that provided the Longhorns an opportunity to make it a game.We played fine in the first half, Snyder said grimly, and laid eggs in the second half.Indeed, the Wildcats (4-3, 2-2 Big 12) raced to a 21-7 lead at the break, and added a field goal in the third quarter to take control. But three turnovers, including one by Charles Jones at the goal line, allowed the Longhorns (3-4, 1-3) to get within 24-14 later in the quarter. The Longhorns couldnt overcome their own multitude of mistakes, though. Among them was a badly missed 35-yard field-goal attempt with just over four minutes remaining that would have made it 24-17.The Longhorns eventually got the ball back, but then squandered precious time with running plays before Shane Buechele hit Dorian Leonard from 6 yards out with 46 seconds left. Then they knocked the ensuing onside kick out of bounds, preventing them from having a chance to kick a tying field goal. Its tough when you lose a game and we had the opportunity to go win it, said Texas coach Charlie Strong, whose hot seat only got hotter with his third loss in four games. We needed big stops in the first half and we didnt make them. We were able to bounce back there in the second half -- its just that weve got to learn from it, got to move on. ... Weve just got to get ourselves back together.Jesse Ertz led the Wildcats with 171 yards passing and a touchdown and 78 yards rushing and two more scores. He also teamed with running backs Charles Jones, Justin Silmon and Alex Barnes to pile up 240 yards on the ground against a Texas defense that began loading up the box to stop them. The result was the Wildcats fifth straight home win over Texas.I was kind of upset after last week, Kansas State linebacker Elijah Lee said of a lopsided loss to Oklahoma. Thats something you have to carry with you: The season isnt over. You have to take it game by game.Buechele finished with 222 yards and two scores passing, but a big chunk of that came on an 80-yard pass to Devin Duvernay in the second quarter. Otherwise, Buechele was sacked twice and corralled most of the day.DOnta Foreman, the nations second-leading rusher, carried 24 times for 124 yards. But he was repeatedly stuffed in key situations, a big reason why Texas was 3 of 11 on third down and 0 for 2 on fourth.Beats the tar out of a loss, Snyder said in summary, but its not so much the win as how. If we play and prepare well start to finish, wed be better. Thats why Im not jumping up and down right now.THE TAKEAWAYTEXAS: After eclipsing 500 yards total offense for the fourth time this season a week ago against Iowa State, the Longhorns struggled to move the ball. They managed a season-low 344 yards on Saturday.KANSAS STATE: The fumble by Jones at the goal line summed up the Wildcats inconsistency issues. The senior running back otherwise had a solid day but, as Snyder pointed out, Were all taught when were 5 years old to put two hands on the football.PENALTY PROBLEMSTexas was penalized 10 times for 72 yards, drawing four flags on the Wildcats scoring march to open the game. Kansas State countered with eight penalties for 75 yards. It made for a busy game for an officiating crew that also spent a whole lot of time reviewing plays.SEEING REDThe Wildcats had scored on 56 straight trips inside the red zone before Jones fumbled in the third quarter. The last time they failed to score was Oct. 17, 2015, in a shutout loss to the Sooners.UP NEXTTEXAS: Ninth-ranked Baylor visits Austin on Saturday.KANSAS STATE: A trip to Iowa State awaits Saturday. Dallas hasnt ruled out the star quarterback for Sunday nights game against Philadelphia, but all signs point to Romos back injury pushing Kyle Orton into the starting role after two years of limited play as the backup. Surely Ortons name isnt the first that comes to mind for fans wanting a change after years of damaging interceptions, fumbles or, most infamously, the field goal flub when Romo dropped the snap on a kick that could have won his first playoff game in 2006. http://www.customjaguarsjersey.com/ . WASHINGTON -- The Cleveland Indians starting rotation is suddenly on a roll. After struggling through a tough stretch last week, right hander Josh Tomlin will look to turn in the teams fourth consecutive strong outing when the Indians close out their two-game series at the Washington on Wednesday.Tuesday night was Trevor Bauers turn. He bounced back from the worst outing of his career to pitch 6 1/3 shutout innings for the win as the Indians defeated the Nationals 3-1.That followed quality work from Corey Kluber and Carlos Carrasco over the weekend. The trio combined for a 1.27 ERA over 21 1/3 innings over the three games. What it does is it kind of sets up everybody for their roles, said bench coach Brad Mills, who managed Tuesdays game when Terry Francona was taken ill prior to the start. Its sure nice to get, theres no doubt.Like Bauer, Tomlin (11-4, 3.81 ERA) hopes to rebound from a bad outing. He allowed a season-high seven earned runs on nine hits over 4 2/3 innings in his last start, a loss to the Yankees.Tomlin ranks second in the majors in walks per nine innings (1.15) and third in strikeout to walk ratio (5.56). Hell be making his first career start versus the Nationals, and owns a career .600 batting average (6-for-10).The Nationals meanwhile are suddenly struggling to score runs, winning 1-0 on Sunday before Tuesdays loss.Max Scherzer took a no-hitter into the seventh before surrendering two runs. Jayson Werths homer cut the deficit to one before the Indians added a run in the ninth. It went from a no-hitter to a loss in a matter of time and we couldnt muster too much offense, Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. We hit a couple balls hard, but they hit a couple balls hard also. It was a well-played and well-pitched game.Perhaps its no coincidence that Washington was again without Bryce Harper, whos now missed ttwo straight games with a stiff neck.ddddddddddddHes been getting worked on and stuff, Baker said. Anybody thats had a stiff neck realizes how tough that is, especially to swing. Hes on a day-to-day basis. The reigning National League MVP, Harper is hitting just .233, but is second on the team with 20 homers and third with 57 RBI.Werth also drew a walk in Tuesdays loss as he extended his on-base streak to 39 games.Washington starter Gio Gonzalez (7-9, 4.13) has been resurgent of late. He enters with a 3-1 record and a 2.03 ERA in his last five starts, including 6 1/3 innings with just two earned runs allowed in a no-decision at Cleveland on July 16.Gonzalez, the former Oakland Athletic, has enjoyed facing the Indians. In eight career starts against them, hes 5-0 with 1.07 ERA, though only one of those meetings has come since 2013.Hell have to contend with a red-hot Jose Ramirez. Hitting in the fourth spot, Ramirez drove in two runs with two hits Tuesday night, stole a base and scored a run.Hes been doing it all year, Mills said after the game. He was hitting cleanup tonight for a reason. In his last 15 games, Ramirez is batting .407 (22-for-54) with five doubles, two home runs, five RBI, 10 runs scored and eight stolen bases. One question mark for Cleveland is the status of its manager. Mills said Francona, who had expressed discomfort during his pregame media session, was examined at the ballpark. He started feeling ill. I know the doctors checked him out and so forth and they just felt itd be better for him to go back to the hotel and he did, Mills said.Knowing him he was probably really agonizing during the game, but I think hes doing fine hopefully and well see how it works out for tomorrow.
