CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Panthers quarterback Cam Newtons concerns about illegal hits have been heard by the NFL -- and action has been taken.A person familiar with the situation says Arizona Cardinals defensive tackle Calais Campbell has been fined $18,000 for his hit on Newton in Sundays game. The person spoke to The Associated Press Wednesday on condition of anonymity because the league does not publicly announce fines.Newton had a phone conversation with NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Tuesday about his perspective on the hits he takes from defensive players while in the pocket.I got my point across. He got his point across. Thats it, Newton said earlier Wednesday at his weekly news conference.Newton said after Sundays game he didnt feel protected in the pocket after no flag was thrown when Campbell crashed into his legs as he was releasing the football.Dean Blandino, the NFLs senior vice president of officiating, said on NFL Network that Campbell should have been penalized for roughing the passer. You can see Campbell coming up the middle and hes going to hit Cam in the knee area or below; forcible contact, driving through with the shoulder -- thats a foul for roughing the passer, Blandino said on the show. We want our referees to call that. Well address that with the crews going forward. Before the AP learned of Campbells fine, Newton was asked if he thinks his concerns will be enforced on the field in the future and the quarterback replied, Well wait to see Sunday and moving forward. The Panthers visit the Rams on Sunday.Newton didnt provide details of his talk with Goodell, saying it was a confidential conversation.Newton did say he raised many of the same issues he had on Sunday when he blasted officials in his postgame news conference following Carolinas 30-20 win over Arizona. Newton said at the time he didnt feel safe in the pocket because officials were allowing defenders to take illegal shots at him.Newton said he just wants to be treated like other NFL quarterbacks regardless of his size.Illegal hits for me start in the pocket, Newton said Wednesday. It is funny how a lot of people have a lot to say. I know when I am running the football I am on my own. I understand that. Im not a dummy or oblivious to the fact that I run the football more than any quarterback who has ever played this game. I mean, duh. Im fine with that.In the pocket, thats all Im asking for, just to get ... the same calls, thats all.Newton said after his call with the commissioner he had a positive vibe.Anytime youre being heard, obviously, with a person of his magnitude, I respect that, Newton said. I just wanted to be efficient of his time and make sure I got my point across. I believe I did. ... We ended on good terms. We started on good terms as well. Nothing changes.Panthers coach Ron Rivera has supported Newton, comparing him to Shaquille ONeal in that he doesnt get the calls because hes bigger than other players at his position. At the end of the day, its not about special treatment, Rivera said. Its about being treated the same.During his first four seasons in the league, Newton benefited from 22 roughing-the-passer penalties against the opposition, according to NFLpenalties.com. However, since the start of the 2015 season no defender has been called for roughing the passer on hits to Newton -- at least not a penalty that cost the opponent yards. The Denver Broncos were flagged once in Week 1, but the penalty was offset because Newton was flagged for intentional grounding on the same play.Panthers tight end Greg Olsen has been saying for years that Newton simply doesnt get the same calls as other quarterbacks.I have commented on this a thousand times -- I think they should just enforce the rules, Olsen said. Thats not unreasonable. There are rules in place. Its not like were trying to install new rules. The rules are there. So I dont think we need to make this overly complicated.Rivera suggested earlier in the week the NFL may want to consider adding an eighth referee on the field next season to help protect the quarterback. He also suggested that teams should be allowed to challenge what they deem as an illegal hit on the quarterback. When asked if it is more difficult to call roughing the passer penalties with a quarterback like Newton or Pittsburghs Ben Roethlisberger, Blandino replied, Its the posture thats going to dictate the protection. We want our referees to be as consistent as possible, and quarterbacks have to understand that you get more protection in the pocket in a passing posture. And when you leave the pocket and youre in a running posture, youre going to lose protections.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLDiscount Hydro Flask Cheap . Prince Fielder, Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter homered, and Anibal Sanchez pitched six scoreless innings to help the Tigers overcome Cabreras latest absence in a 6-2 win over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. Cabrera, the reigning AL MVP and baseballs first Triple Crown winner in 45 years last season, left Mondays game in the bottom of the fifth inning with a left hip flexor injury. He hasnt played since and might sit out Thursday, too, when the Tigers go for a four-game sweep and their fifth straight win. Sanchez (8-7) earned his first win since July 6, allowing six hits and striking out five. The right-hander had only allowed five earned runs in his previous two starts, both losses, but continued Detroits strong starting pitching during the series. In three games, Tigers starters have pitched 21 innings and allowed two runs, giving the Cabrera-less lineup room to breathe. "We need (Cabrera) on the end," Sanchez said. "Hes a big piece of the lineup and we need to try to play hard without him." They did just that Wednesday, hitting three homers off John Danks (2-8) despite not having Cabrera, who is hitting .358 with 31 homers and 96 RBIs. "It falls squarely on me. This is no one elses fault. It was just one of those nights," Danks said. "There is no other way to explain it, just wasnt able to do what I wanted to do. "Thats just the way it goes. I understand what happened. I understand adjustments need to be made, and we will work on it." Fielder gave the Tigers a 3-0 lead in the first with his 17th home run. Hunter reached on a fielders choice, and Matt Tuiasosopo walked before Fielder hit a 1-0 pitch into deep right-centre field for his first homer since July 10. Danks retired the first two batters in the second before Jackson hooked the first pitch around the foul pole in left to make it 4-0. In the fifth, Hunter hit his ninth homer to give Detroit a 5-0 lead. Hunter went 2 for 5, improving to .354 in July. Over three games against left-handed starters Chris Sale, Hector Santiago, and Danks, Detroit has scored 11 earned runs. "Well, I mean, yeah, we did a good job," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. "Prince has hit lefties real good. He got us off to a great start." That was enough to propel Sanchez and Detrroit past Chicago, which dropped to 20 games below .dddddddddddd500 for the first time Sept. 26, 2007. The White Sox are a season-high 16 games out of first place. Danks lost his second straight start and is winless since July 2. He worked seven innings and matched his season high by giving up six runs along with 11 hits -- including the three home runs to give him 17 allowed this season in 12 starts. "It was a tough game. Kind of a frustrating game," Danks said. "Hard to make the ball do what I wanted it to and hard to get it where I wanted it to be." Nights like Wednesday are why the White Sox are expected to be sellers before the July 31 trade deadline. "There are a lot of things floating out there that make it more difficult for guys to just play baseball," Ventura said. "I think subconsciously it is in there. Whether you like to think so or not, its there, because everything is floating out there. Ill be glad when it turns August." By then, Cabrera should be back for the Tigers. Not that they need to rush him back the way the offence has been without him. "Thats good because that gives him more chance to recover (from) the soreness hes got," Sanchez said.
