Stanford has won three Pac-12 titles in the past four seasons, but for the Cardinal to win it again, they probably cant afford another conference loss. The 15th-ranked Cardinal, in the midst of a brutal stretch of the season, are coming off a 44-6 loss at Washington, their worst defeat in coach David Shaws six-year tenure. Stanford (3-1 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) will try to pick up the pieces against Washington State on Saturday at Stanford Stadium, beginning at 10:30 p.m. ET.Shaw said there will be no panic.I will be in the minority, but its the fourth game, and were 3-1, he said. Well get attacked like were 0-12 already. Were not going to give up on ourselves. Others might. Thats fine. Were not going to get too low.Washington State (2-2, 1-0) comes in on a high. The Cougars defeated visiting Oregon 51-33, rolling up 651 total yards, including 280 on the ground, their most in a conference game since 2005.WSU head coach Mike Leach, who usually works with the quarterbacks and receivers during practice, recently has been spending more time with the offensive line. The running game, fueled by a trio of tailbacks -- James Williams, Gerard Wicks and James Morrow -- has gained 508 yards on 65 carries in the past two games. The offensive line did a really good job, Leach said about the Oregon game. They are quality backs, but we are bigger than we have been, and now they are starting to play a little better together than they were early on.Stanford is the team in this matchup better known for its big offensive line and star running backs. But junior running back Christian McCaffrey, the 2015 Heisman runner-up, managed just 49 yards on 12 carries against Washington, his lowest output since a 2014 game against California.Quarterback Ryan Burns has been efficient, completing 50 of 79 passes for 546 yards, with four touchdowns and two interceptions. But he was held to 151 passing yards last week and was sacked six times. We didnt play well. We didnt block well. We couldnt run the ball. We couldnt pass protect and we couldnt complete passes with any consistency, particularly the first two and a half quarters, Shaw said. Just not the style of football that we can play and not as well as we can play.Stanford, the preseason Pac-12 favorite in a league media poll, opened conference play with victories over USC and at UCLA before the Washington game. Now comes Washington State, a game at Notre Dame and then a home game vs. Colorado, which entered the AP poll this week for the first time since 2005.The Cardinal are dealing with a few key injuries, notably starting cornerbacks Quenton Meeks and Alijah Holder, who each missed the loss to Washington. Shaw said Tuesday that both are likely to miss Saturdays game.Holder leads the team with five pass break-ups. Meeks twice intercepted Washington State quarterback Luke Falk in last seasons 30-28 Stanford victory in Pullman, Wash.Alameen Murphy and Terrence Alexander started in their place last week and will be busy if they get the call against Washington States Air Raid passing attack. WSU is tied for first nationally with Texas Tech for the most passing attempts per game -- 53.75.Falk, fourth in the country in passing at 373.8 yards per game, completed 36 of 48 passes for 371 yards without an interception against Oregon. Senior wide receiver Gabe Marks ranks sixth nationally with 9.0 catches per game and has 29 career touchdown receptions.Theyre running the ball with good efficiency, Shaw said. Combined with their pass attack, theyre very tough to stop.Stanford has won eight in a row over the Cougars, matching its longest winning streak in the series. Cardinal kicker Conrad Ukropina, who has made all six of his field goal attempts this season, was the hero of last seasons game. Ukropina hit three field goals, including the go-ahead 19-yarder with less than two minutes remaining. This area could be an edge to Stanford, as WSU place-kicker Erik Powell has missed all four of his field goal attempts this season (two were blocked) after a season in which he was just 5 of 10. He missed a 43-yard field-goal attempt on the final play of last years game against Stanford that would have given the Cougars the victory. We should have won last year, Leach said of the Stanford game. Thats our own fault. We have to do everything we can to control our own destiny. Nike Blazer Low Le Black . SAN DIEGO -- Colin Kaepernick and San Francisco 49ers safety Eric Reid kneeled during the national anthem Thursday night, continuing the quarterbacks preseason protest of American racial injustice and minority oppression.Kaepernick and Reid dropped to one knee while a naval officer sang The Star-Spangled Banner and dozens of military members unfurled an oversized flag at the Chargers Qualcomm Stadium.Kaepernick received scattered boos when he dropped to a knee, but the protest was otherwise unremarked by the San Diego crowd. The 49ers visit coincided with the annual Salute to the Military preseason game for the Chargers, who have strong fan support in their citys extensive armed forces community.Kaepernick got much heavier boos when he took the field to start the game for the 49ers and immediately led them on a 16-play, 85-yard touchdown drive. The veteran quarterback is attempting to regain the starting job that he lost last season.Kaepernicks protest has dominated the public discussion of the nations most popular sport this week, and his stance has been met with equally passionate condemnation and support. His refusal to stand for the anthem first came to public notice last week when he remained seated on the 49ers bench before a preseason game against Green Bay.When Kaepernick left the field following pregame warmups, he was greeted with profanity and obscene gestures from Leo Uzcategui, a 20-year Navy veteran in a military-green Chargers jersey with quarterback Philip Rivers No. 17 in camouflage numbering.I was in the Navy and I saw men and women bleed and die for this flag, Uzcategui said. If he wants to do something, go to some outreach program where he can do some good. And I get it, his First Amendment right. But you dont sit during the presenting of the colors, and you dont sit during the national anthem. That is not the way to do it.Domenique Banks, a 23-year-old fan from nearby Oceanside, California, got the quarterback to sign his Kaepernick jersey before the game.I told him I appreciate what he is standing up for, Banks said. He said he appreciated it. Most of the people I talk to say the same thing. I dont like that he is sitting during the national anthem, but I appreciate what he is standing for.Kaepernick said he had invited teammates to sit with him during the anthem, but didnt expect any to join him. His invitation apparently was accepted by Reid, the 49ers starting safety and a fourth-year veteran from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Reid, who wasnt in uniform for the game, had been publicly supportive of Kaepernicks stance.Onee sign in the crowd read: Youre an American.dddddddddddd Act like one.In Oakland, Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane also sat on the bench behind his standing teammates as the national anthem was performed before Seattles game against the Raiders.Kaepernick kneeled next to Nate Boyer, a former Green Beret who went to training camp with the Seahawks last year as a long snapper. Boyer, who wrote a conciliatory open letter to Kaepernick earlier this week, had a long conversation with the quarterback about his stance this week, and he posted a photo of the two on Twitter with a caption reading, Lets just keep moving forward. This is what America should be all about.Kaepernicks visit to San Diego fell on the Chargers 28th annual Salute to the Military, a night designed to pay tribute to the tens of thousands of active and retired military personnel who live in the area. The festivities included pregame music from the Marine Band San Diego, halftime recognition of Vietnam War veterans, and a crowd filled with numerous injured soldiers invited as special guests.Kaepernick has said he doesnt intend his stance to be a criticism of the military, claiming he has great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country.Kaepernicks social activism, which only emerged publicly in recent weeks, also included support for the Black Lives Matter movement through social media. While negative reaction to the quarterback has been strong, Kaepernick also has been widely praised for his commitment to his stance. Veterans and military members tweeted their support for Kaepernick in recent days under the hashtag VeteransForKaepernick.Jim Brown voiced support for Kaepernick while disagreeing with his method of protest. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar called Kaepernicks decision highly patriotic while encouraging him to take further steps to build dialogue between law enforcement and blacks.Amid the uproar of his emerging social activism, Kaepernick is still trying to win a job with the 49ers less than four years after leading them to the Super Bowl. The quarterback lost the starting job last season, and he hasnt separated himself from Blaine Gabbert this summer under new coach Chip Kelly.Gabbert wasnt expected to play in the San Diego finale because he had already played much more in the preseason than Kaepernick, who didnt appear until San Franciscos third exhibition game.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
