TORONTO -- Organizers of the 2015 Parapan Am Games are counting down one year until more than 1,600 para-athletes hit Toronto for a chance at gold. Sports Minister Bal Gosal said the games offer Canadian para-athletes a "tremendous opportunity" to hone their skills on home turf. All 15 sports at the Parapan Am Games are qualifiers for the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Calgarian para-cyclist and quadruple amputee Jaye Milley said its "indescribable" to have the games in Canada. "Its so amazing having your home crowd cheer for you," he said, adding that the para-sport movement is gradually becoming more popular. Milley finished fourth in the 1,000-metre time trial at the 2011 Parapan Am Games in Guadalajara, Mexico. "What people are starting to realize is we train just as hard. We are just as competitive. We go just as fast and we are just as good to watch," he said. Wheelchair basketball player David Eng said his entire team is moving to Toronto to train together in the lead-up to the games. "This is the only thing that matters for us right now," he said, adding that the one-year countdown is a milestone that has spurred the team to train harder. In celebration of the countdown, organizers launched a video dubbed "Are you ready?" showcasing para-athletes and their intensive training rituals. Eng, a two-time Paralympic winner from Montreal, said his regimen includes doing chin-ups while sitting in a wheelchair, lifting it off the ground. He added that he also puts elastic bands on the wheels of his chair to create resistance and in the past he has used a gas mask during exercise to restrict oxygen intake, forcing him to focus on breathing. "Its really amazing that its here in Toronto," he said, adding that its a chance to show the public what wheelchair basketball is all about. "The high performance, the high elite, the excitement, the electricity," he said. Next years competition, from Aug. 7 to 15, 2015, will mark the first time the Parapan Am Games will be held in Canada. Gosal said preparations for the games are going well. "All the venues are either on budget or under budget, on time," he said. The federal government committed $500 million to infrastructure, legacy funds and services such as border security for the Pan Am and Parapan Am Games. The Parapan Am Games follow the Pan Am Games, which will take place in Toronto July 10 to 26 next year. Jim Popp isnt banking on quarterback Anthony Calvillo or any of the Montreal Alouettes walking wounded returning Thursday night to face the B.C. Lions. Calvillo, who is suspected of having a concussion, was among eight Alouettes injured in their 24-21 road loss to the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Saturday. And given Montreals quick turnaround, interim head coach Popp is assuming all eight wont suit up against B.C. (5-2). "Guys were getting MRIs, seeing doctors (Monday) and (Tuesday) they sit down and get the final word of where they are but we cant wait on that," the Alouettes general manager said in a telephone interview. "Weve had to move forward as though all eight arent playing and if you get one or two back, then great. "But weve had to go into the thinking mode that were not going to have them and move forward." Calvillo, who will celebrate his 41st birthday Friday, was injured in the first half after taking a hard hit from Saskatchewan defensive end Ricky Foley. Pro footballs all-time passing leader had completed four-of-eight passes for 85 yards at the time with Montreal (2-5) trailing 7-3. Backup Josh Neiswander replaced Calvillo, completing 12-of-30 passes for 147 yards and two interceptions. It was Neiswanders first CFL regular-season action since signing with Montreal in 2011. "Ive always said I dont want to know who our next quarterback is, I hope our starter stays on the field," Popp said. "Thats a good sign. "You find guys, you prep them and if they are called to play then they go out there and play and either you win with them or you dont and you realize if theyve got it or they dont have it." If Calvillo doesnt play against B.C., Popp would expect Neiswander to start but could also see rookie Tanner Marsh getting some playing time. Both took snaps with the starting offence in practice last week prior to Montreals game in Regina. "We planned last week that wed play both if it came down to that and we ended up not because Josh handled it fairly well," Popp said. "Hes the more experienced guy and hes looked good in practice but we could very easily see both of them if Anthony doesnt play." Trouble is, Calvillo wasnt the only Alouette hurt in Regina. Also injured were linebackers Bryn Roy (knee), Jonathan Beaulieu-Richard (ankle) and Kyries Hebert (knee), long-snapper Martin Bedard (shoulder), tackle Josh Bourke (knee), safety Mike Edem (shoulder) and receiver Brandon London (head). Whats more, Roy, Beaulieu-Richard, Bedard, Bourke and Edem are all Canadians. Replacing alll of them under normal circumstances would be a huge challenge, let alone on a short week.dddddddddddd "Even to get a guy off a practice roster, theres a process to it," Popp said. "If we were awarded a guy he wouldnt get here in time to practise so theres no sense in doing that. "You get to whats on the street, well, weve made calls to the primary agents that represent most of the non-import guys and they dont have anybody . . . and the guys that were actually on the street a couple of weeks ago who are going back to CIS, well, theyre in practice now and are going back to school so thats limited the number. But thats everybodys problem, not just ours." Popp said London is definitely recovering from a concussion and wont play against the Lions. Earlier this month, Montreal lost veteran receiver Jamel Richardson, a two-time all-star, to a season-ending knee injury in practice. Montreal wasnt the only CFL club hit hard by injuries last weekend. Saskatchewan slotback Rob Bagg injured his left knee in the first half. The native of Kingston, Ont., had missed portions of the previous two seasons with injuries to both knees. Bagg appeared to be in tears while walking off the field. An update on his status is expected Tuesday when the Riders return to practice. Riders slotback Weston Dressler jammed his left shoulder against Montreal but remained in the game, finishing with five catches for 51 yards and a TD. Calgarys Nik Lewis was among the many CFL players tweeting their best wishes to Bagg following his injury. Hours later, the Stampeders veteran receiver suffered a fractured fibula in a 26-22 road loss to B.C. on Saturday night and is expected to miss six weeks. Injuries and an early coaching change have combined to make for a difficult start to the 2013 season for Montreal. Popp is 0-2 as interim coach replacing Dan Hawkins, who was fired after just five games. Presently Montreal has 12 players on the nine-game injured list and running backs Brandon Whitaker (separated shoulder) and Noel Devine (ankle sprain) both didnt play in Regina. Popp isnt optimistic either will suit up Thursday considering the Alouettes wont play again until Sept. 3 in Toronto and both could use the extra time to heal up. "Listen, weve had that kind of year, weve had a lot of injuries," Popp said. "You dont always have that, youre very fortunate some years not to have as many injuries as others but I still believe we can win any game we go into. "Yeah, were missing very key people but we wont make that an excuse." Hitchcock also mused that he probably should have given rugged Ryan Reaves more ice time after the game had gotten out of hand and added that it was more important to get his team back on track rather than call Gabriel Landeskog "gutless or whatever." Hitchcock referred to the confrontations and likely aftermath as the "debris around the game." Backes said Roy was "entitled to his opinion." "There were some liberties, I feel like," Backes said. "I drop my glove and never throw a punch and end up with whatever many penalty minutes out of the ordeal. "Its frustration, everything boiling over for a lot of guys after they dont respond well." Semyon Varlamov tied the franchise single-season record for goalie wins held by Roy and Paul Stastny had another big game in his hometown in the penalty-filled game. The Avalanche avoided a season series sweep against St. Louis after losing the first three meetings. "Our power play was sharp, penalty kill was rock solid, goaltendding was phenomenal again," Roy said.dddddddddddd "I just felt like we dominated them." Stastny had a goal and two assists and Mackinnon had a goal and an assist for Colorado, which has won six in a row. Roy became the fifth coach in NHL history to win 50 games in his first season. "It was kind of a big game for us," Stastny said. "It got chippy at the end but we stood up to that and will deal with that." Varlamov made 31 saves for his second shutout of the season and NHL-leading 40th win, matching Roys total in 2000-01. The Blues fell two points behind Boston, which beat the Flyers 5-2, for first place overall. Theyve been dependent on goalie Ryan Miller with Vladimir Tarasenko out since mid-March with a hand injury and Alexander Steen also sidelined, and scored two or fewer goals for the seventh time in 10 games. There were several scrums and frustration boiled over for the Blues late in the third. Ryan OReilly scored his 27th goal on a power play with a two-man advantage after Backes and Barret Jackman both received 10-minute misconducts. The Blues had 91 minutes in penalties in the third and finished the game with seven players on the bench. St. Louis has been shut out on home ice for the first two times all season in the past three games. Stastny, who grew up in St. Louis, has 30 points in 24 career games against the Blues. He has two goals and six assists in a seven-game point streak. The first five games in Colorados win streak were decided by one goal, two in overtime and two by shootouts. The first three goals against St. Louis came on rebounds. Stastny scored his 22nd goal on a power play at 1:14 of the second and MacKinnon had a wide open net at 6:20, a little more than a minute after Hitchcock called timeout. Nick Holden made it 3-0 at 10:25 after a lengthy review because he kicked the puck, but replays indicated the Blues Steve Otts stick touched the puck before it crossed the goal line. Notes: Roy is the first coach to win 50 games in his debut season since San Joses Todd McLellan won 53 games in 2008-09. ... Steen (lower body) did not dress for the second straight game and Hitchcock said hes also out Sunday.
