NEW ORLEANS -- It may not be time just yet for the New Orleans Pelicans to press the panic button -- it will take a few more losses before fans demand the black box with the nuclear codes -- but their 0-3 start is as bad as it gets right now in the NBA, especially since theyve squandered monster numbers by All-Star Anthony Davis in two of the three losses.Unfortunately, Pelicans fans have seen this before. Last season, injury-riddled New Orleans fell prostrate at the starting gate, losing 11 of its first 12 games to dig a hole from which it never recovered during a 30-52 season. So, when the Pelicans host the 1-2 Milwaukee Bucks Tuesday night at the Smoothie King Center, coach Alvin Gentry, despite his calm demeanor after practice on Monday, knows he needs a victory, and he needs it now.I think we need a win, obviously, Gentry said. If you win a game, it takes the pressure off. We have to establish something at home and be able to know that if we play our best basketball, we can win a game and not just play close.Davis is playing the role of solid soldier. He became the second player in NBA history (other than Michael Jordan) to score 50 points in a season opener since 1963-64 when he scored 50 (with 16 rebounds, seven steals, five assists and four blocks) in a 107-102 home loss to the Denver Nuggets, and he followed that up with 45 points in a 122-114 loss to the Golden State Warriors last Friday night. In a 98-79 road loss in San Antonio on Saturday, Davis was limited to just 18 points, lowering his scoring average to 37.7 points. Point guard Tim Frazier (13.7) and shooting guard ETwaun Moore (10.7) are the only other Pelicans scoring in double figures, and New Orleans ranks last in the league in 3-point percentage (.190) on 12-of-63 shooting. At some point, you have to make shots, Davis said. You have to start knocking them down. Were not shooting the ball well, and we have to find another way to win. And, its not just one guy. Its a couple of guys -- (rookie guard) Buddy (Hield), Solomon (Hill), Langston (Galloway). We have to find a way to make shots.Perhaps the Bucks will be the magic elixir that gives the Pelicans their first victory of the season. Milwaukees only win came on a buzzer-beating tip-in by John Henson that beat the Brooklyn Nets 110-108 on Saturday night.Coach Jason Kidd is toying with his lineup, trying to figure out the best bench rotations. Like the Pelicans, the Bucks are struggling from the outside, going 7 of 33 from long range in their two losses to Charlotte and Detroit. The Bucks, who are still figuring each other out, shot just 39 percent from the field against the Pistons.I dont think we can use that as an excuse, said guard Matthew Dellavedova, the Bucks free-agent pickup during the offseason. I think we need to get better.Kidd said he believes Dellavedova is very capable of running the point full time.I thought Delly had a great summer, being the point guard for Australia (in the Olympics), Kidd said. He ran the show, he and Patty Mills in the backcourt. Delly is a great complement to everybody. Wholesale Air Max 90 Australia . CINCINNATI -- Eastern Washington coach Jim Hayford realizes the challenge before his team when the Eagles play at No. 17 Xavier on Tuesday night in front of a sellout crowd of more than 10,000 fans at Cintas Center. We are playing in a little deeper water than we are used to, Hayford said.Especially since they are facing a Musketeers team that has not yet hit its stride, which could happen soon.Xavier (9-2) committed 15 turnovers Saturday in a win over Wake Forest, resulting in 18 points for the Demon Deacons. Standout point guard Edmond Sumner had six of those giveaways, raising his team-leading total to 34.Musketeers coach Chris Mack said Sumner is dealing with a hand issue that is only partly responsible. Sumner is playing with his pinky and ring fingers taped. He needs to handle the ball better, Mack said. They all do. Turnovers havent been a huge issue for this team. We just have to correct them. There has been no issue with junior guard Trevon Bluiett who was named to the Big East Conference weekly honor roll for the second straight week after having a team-high 20 points and seven rebounds in the win over Wake Forest.Xavier is hoping to get J.P. Macura hot again from the perimeter. He was 5 of 7 from 3-point range in a win over Utah, but that was sandwiched between four games in which the junior guard was just 3 of 20 from long range. What has pleased Mack most recently is the development of big man RaShid Gaston, who held Wake Forests John Collins to just 9-of-16 shooting on Saturday. Gaston is averaging nine rebounds and 13 points over his past three games.dddddddddddd.He took his opportunity and made the most of it, Mack said of Gaston. Its really good to see. Hes never been the best finisher around the basket. This is who we thought RaShid would be. Hes done a really good job since we inserted him in the starting lineup.Eastern Washington (8-3) had a seven-game winning streak snapped in a 70-48 loss at Northern Kentucky on Sunday. The Eagles were averaging 82 points per game before the defeat.Sophomore guard Bogdan Bliznyuk, a Ukraine native, leads the Eagles with an average of 21.7 points per game. He shoots 37 percent from 3-point range.Eastern Washington plays at Colorado, a team that beat Xavier, on Thursday. Hayford said he is looking forward to the challenges this week.Whats fun is when you go and represent your school and teammates well, he said. Its about whether we can use these opportunities to make us a better team. We are going to give these guys a game plan that if they execute it they could win. If we coach them with the belief they are going to play to the best of their ability and execute the game plan, well be satisfied with our performance. Its not always that easy. The Tuesday game is the first meeting between the two schools. It will be the fifth sellout this season at Cintas Center and the 142nd since the building opened in 2000. Xavier has a 29-game home nonconference winning streak. ' ' '
