SEATTLE -- Lamar Neagle scored off of a free kick by Marc Burch midway through the first half to lead the surging Seattle Sounders to their sixth win in seven matches, 1-0 over Chivas USA on Wednesday night. The Sounders (13-8-4) won their third straight and climbed into a tie with Los Angeles for second place in the Western Conference. Seattle is five points behind league-leading Real Salt Lake, with three games in hand. "Ive had chances here and there, even playing left back," said Neagle, whose goal was his sixth of the season and first since July 28. "Its one of those things that has been coming. Even in training, Ive been trying to work on finishing as much as possible. "When it came down to it, we got one, and thats all we needed with the shutouts weve been getting." It was the Sounders fourth straight goal in the last four games scored off of a free kick. "We felt it was important for Lamar to do well," Seattle coach Sigi Schmid said. "We also felt weve been very good in set pieces and free kicks lately. We said thats something we want to try to take advantage of, and we did again." Chivas (5-15-7) had its road winless streak extended to 12 (0-9-3). "We almost scored at the end, but unfortunately, the referee finished the game," Chivas USA coach Jose Luis Real said. "Before the game, we talked about (Seattles scoring on set pieces), but it wasnt enough. In the first half, Seattle was better. But in the second half, Chivas, in my opinion, was better." A hard foul on Seattle defender DeAndre Yedlin gave the Sounders a free kick 23 yards up from the goal line on the right side. Burch drove the ball into the penalty area and Neagle, after settling it at the top right corner of the box, turned and drilled a right-footed shot into the far side of the net early in the 24th minute. Sounders goalkeeper Michael Gspurning picked up his third straight shutout and ninth of the year. The Sounders were without Clint Dempsey and Eddie Johnson, who are both with the U.S. national team for World Cup qualifying games Friday at Costa Rica and next Tuesday against Mexico in Columbus, Ohio. Only crutches supported Dave Bolland as he met with the media for the first time since a tendon outside his left ankle was severed. The 27-year-old could not pinpoint a date for his return, still stung by disappointment from the injury and its effects on his first season as a Leaf. "Things were going well and then something like this happens [and] it really crushes you," said Bolland, who had six goals and 10 points amid a quick start in Toronto. It was more than a week ago in Vancouver that the 27-year-old dug deep for a puck in the Toronto zone when his foot was sliced by the left skate of Zack Kassian. Lingering on the ice uncomfortably as Kassian and the Canucks scored their second goal in an eventual 4-0 loss, Bolland was helpless. Eventually assisted off the ice by teammates, he left the arena on a stretcher, requiring surgery in B.C. the next day. "I just went in the corner and by the time I turned around, I just fell and didnt really feel anything in my ankle," he said. "Tried to get up and my ankle just buckled.dddddddddddd" Bolland was convinced that the actions of Kassian were without malice, the Kevlar socks he wore unable to protect his ankle from injury. "Its just a freak thing," he said. "Its hockey. Youre going in the corners and youre wearing sharp blades; it was just a little opening in my foot that got cut." Unable to put any weight on the foot, the Toronto native has been stuck at home with little to do, save for watching television and spending time with his new daughter. "You cant do much," he said. "Youve got to let the healing begin. For me, its sitting in front of my Apple TV watching as [many] shows as I can." "Get to see the motherhood of life and see what goes on actually when Im on the road," he continued. "Had to actually change a diaper and do things like that." One of two injured Toronto centres – Tyler Bozak also remains out – Bolland could not pinpoint any specific return date – hes certain hell be back this season – but he expects to remain on crutches for a month.
