MILAN, Italy -- Fiorentina beat 10-man Hellas Verona 4-3 in an eventful Italian league game on Monday to boost its hopes of qualifying for next seasons Champions League, while Napoli won 3-2 at Lazio to stay in touch with Juventus and Roma. Four of the goals came in the opening 15 minutes in an open match at the Stadio Franchi as Fiorentina captain Borja Valero scored twice, either side of goals from on-loan Fiorentina midfielder Romulo and Juan Iturbe for Verona. Juan Vargas fired Fiorentina in front shortly before halftime and Giuseppe Rossi added a fourth from the penalty spot after Bosko Jankovic had been shown a straight red card for handball. The U.S-born Rossi, who plays for the Italian national team, is the top scorer in Serie A with 12 goals, four more than Torinos Alessio Cerci. Jorginho reduced the deficit in the 72nd minute as both sides had several chances to add to their tallies. Fiorentina moved level with fourth-place Inter Milan, four points behind Napoli. Verona is five points further back in sixth. "As soon as we let our pace drop we concede a goal, we have to be more focused," Fiorentina coach Vincenzo Montella said. "Verona is a good team but we should have been more cynical, when we had a numerical superiority and were ahead by two goals. "We have to improve on that aspect. When we were 4-2 up we had five or six chances. We have to improve, but I am happy with fourth spot." Gonzalo Higuain scored twice for Napoli, with former Lazio striker Goran Pandev and Jose Callejon grabbing the visitors other goals. Teenage striker Keita scored for the home side, which had levelled with an own goal by Valon Behrami. Napoli moved six points behind leader Juventus and three behind Roma after ending a run of two successive defeats. Lazio, which remained eighth, has now not won in its past six matches and the players were loudly jeered by the home supporters at the end of the match. "It was a fundamental match for us, we couldnt get too far off top spot," Higuain said. "I am very happy both for me and the squad. "I scored and helped the team win. I felt the support of the fans and Ive been calm even when things werent going too well. Theres still a lot of time until the end of the season, were doing well and we have to grow." Fiorentina took the lead in the fifth minute when Valero cut his way in from the right and fired into the bottom near corner from the edge of the area. But the home sides advantage lasted less than a minute before Neto could only parry Iturbes strike and the onrushing Romulo fired in the rebound. And Hellas went in front in the 13th as Luca Toni found Iturbe, who lashed a stunning 30-yard strike into the top corner. However, its lead also lasted mere seconds before Valero scored his second of the night, carving out space for himself just outside the area before unleashing an effort which was deflected into the top left corner. Fiorentina restored its advantage two minutes from the break when Vargas put an angled drive into the far bottom corner. It extended its lead nine minutes after the interval when Rossi fired a spot kick into the bottom right corner, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. Despite its numerical disadvantage, Verona kept pressing and got back into the game when Tonis shot was saved by Neto but Jorginho was on hand to follow up. Verona goalkeeper Rafael pulled off a number of saves, most notably to deny Rossi, Mati Fernandez and Nenad Tomovic. Both teams were given a standing ovation at the final whistle. In Roma, Napoli broke the deadlock in the 24th minute with a moment of brilliance from Higuain, who ran almost half the length of pitch and held off Michael Ciani before firing under goalkeeper Federico Marchetti. Lazio equalized almost immediately when former player Behrami, who spent three seasons at the capital club, turned into his own net. Another Lazio old boy, Pandev, restored Napolis lead five minutes into the second half with a swiveling shot from close range following a controversial free kick. And Pandev, whose five years at Lazio ended bitterly after a contract dispute, sent a delightful through-ball in for Higuain to score his second in the 72nd minute. The 18-year-old Keita reduced the deficit after a solo run three minutes from time, but Callejon sealed the match in stoppage time. Diamondbacks Domingo Leyba Jersey . "I was talking to Joe on the court," Wizards guard Bradley Beal said. "And he was like, Not this again. I just started laughing." Pierce eventually made a jumper, avoiding his first scoreless game since he was a rookie, but Nene had another big play to make, supplying the assist for Trevor Arizas go-ahead 3-pointer in the extra period Friday night as the Wizards won 112-108. "How up-and-down was that one?" Washington coach Randy Wittman said with a smile as he headed toward the locker room. Up and down. Back and forth. The Nets blew an 11-point lead in the final 4 1/2 minutes of the fourth quarter, when Nene essentially carried the Wizards by scoring 12 of his 20 points, including consecutive three-point plays and then the putback of John Walls missed layup that tied the score at 99 with 1.2 seconds remaining. "Amazing," Wizards forward Martell Webster said. "Gut-check time -- and he showed up." Beal scored 29 points, matching his career-high, Wall had 17 points and 14 assists, and Marcin Gortat had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Wizards, who nearly shut out both Pierce and Kevin Garnett for the first time since the 1990s. Garnett didnt score until his 18-footer with 3:40 to play in regulation, and Pierce waited until overtime before hitting a jumper. Pierce, who was a game-time decision to play after missing the morning shootaround with an illness, finished 1 for 5. Garnett was 2 for 11 and had a dunk attempt emphatically stuffed by Nene in the third quarter. He also had six rebounds, two assists and two steals. "Im not in an offensive rhythm that I would liike," Garnett said.dddddddddddd "But thats not a priority here. . The priority is getting the stops and finishing teams off and finishing quarters off and coming out with better thirds. Who cares about this offence? Needless to say, we got to make buckets. When you come here, you come here with the idea of sacrificing something. I didnt really shoot the ball well, but other places, I made up pretty well." Pierce did not address reporters after the game. "Hes a pro. He put the uniform on, not feeling well," Brooklyn coach Jason Kidd said. "But he came out and gave us everything he could. To be able to answer the call in that overtime, that just shows his leadership and being a professional." Pierce has been held without a point only once in his NBA career -- as a rookie in 1999 with the Boston Celtics. Garnetts only scoreless games were also in his rookie year, three times with the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1995-96 season. Brook Lopez scored 23 points, and Johnson had 16 for the Nets, who are 2-0 at home and 0-3 on the road. Ex-Wizards forward Andray Blatche, booed every time he touched the ball, added 10 points and 13 rebounds. Brooklyn committed 23 turnovers, including nine in the third quarter, essentially cancelling out its 51-36 rebounding advantage. The Nets also went 6 for 24 from 3-point range. The Wizards and Nets played a double-overtime game in Washington last season. The home team lost that one. "If you want to be a good team and have a chance of being in the playoffs," Wall said, "youve got to win close games. We didnt give up." NOTES: The Wizards didnt get their first offensive rebound until the 6:38 mark of the second quarter -- and it was grabbed by the shortest player on the roster, 6-foot-3 backup point guard Eric Maynor, who was following up his own shot. ... The Nets dominated in second-chance points: 17-0 at halftime and 21-6 for the game.
